The 2021 Chevrolet Suburban is the newest in a long line of huge family vehicles, with a name that traces back to the early 20th century when people weren’t necessarily smaller—maybe they just needed less stuff. It competes with other big SUVs from Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and GMC Yukon.

The new Suburban isn’t simply a prettier version of the old one. It also offers more passenger space, a smoother ride and handling, and many more ways to personalize your car according to your needs.

At first glance, the All-New Suburban appears to be a conventional SUV. However, it has best-in-class second-row legroom and cargo capacity, as well as best-in-class third-row length, so it’ll have plenty of space for any – or everything – that comes along for the ride.

The All-New Suburban has six trims, each with its own distinct style and capabilities. The top-of-the-line comforts of High Country, the street style of RST, and the legendary off-road capability of Z71 are all available in six different trims.

In a nutshell, everything is new (except the interior). The redesigned 2021 Suburban is bigger for passengers and freight, offers a new turbodiesel engine choice, and upgrades to its multimedia and safety technologies, bringing it up to date.

The Suburban is a distinct variant of the heavy-duty Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck and is based on the same architecture as that vehicle. Both vehicles are built on the same platform and have a lot in common with the Silverado half-ton, especially when it comes to appearance. The grille narrows toward the middle, but it’s just as upright—just as terrifying—as before. With folds and bends along the sides, at least when it isn’t obstructing the sun, the Suburban plays with available light.

The Suburban is powered by a choice of two carryover V-8 engines. The 5.3-liter makes 355 horsepower, while the 6.2-liter generates 420 hp. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 with 277 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque is for the first time available in the Suburban since 1995. All trims are standard equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission that powers either the rear or all four wheels depending on the options selected. Rear-wheel drive diesel models achieve 23 mpg combined while V8 (also rear-wheel drive) versions get 18 mpg (combined).
