The ninth-generation Mitsubishi Galant appeared in October 2003, replacing the eighth, produced since 1996 (its production continued in Japan until 2006). The new Galant was first unveiled at the New York Auto Show. It was built on the PS platform (the so-called “Project America”). The car began to be produced in a single sedan body. Its appearance was radically different from its predecessor, now it was no longer a predatory “shark”, but a calm middle-class car, the interior design of which echoed the Toyota Camry.
The model was intended primarily for the American market and was not sold everywhere in the world. The list of countries where this model was available is extremely small: the USA, Puerto Rico, Russia, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia. For some time Galante was also offered for sale in Canada and Mexico.
Galant IX was produced in four versions: DE, ES, GTS and Ralliart. The first two modifications were equipped with 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder 4G69 engines with a capacity of 160 hp. from. GTS received a V-shaped “six”, developing 235 liters. from. The most powerful version of the Ralliart, launched in 2007, was equipped with a 3.8-liter V-shaped six-cylinder 258-horsepower engine. Transmissions – five-speed manual or one of the “automatic”: four- (model INVECS II) or five-band.

A special series Mitsubishi Galant Grunder (later simply Grunder) has been manufactured and sold in Taiwan since 2004, and also supplied to the Philippines and China. In the latter, it was called the Galant 240M and was equipped with a 2.4-liter MIVEC series engine.
Unfortunately, demand for the car did not meet the manufacturer’s expectations, and Mitsubishi decided to first cut production (including in favor of the more popular Lancer and Outlander models). In 2012, production of the Galant was completely discontinued, and no replacement was developed for the car.
