Most Hyundais have the oil type printed on the oil cap – it will likely be 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, or 10W-40. Check your owner’s manual for the exact type before adding new oil if it isn’t printed on the oil cap. We recommend wearing safety glasses whenever you are working under your Sonata.
You never know what could be dripping down from the engine, battery acid, engine coolant, brake fluid, etc. All of these fluids are extremely harmful to your eyes and skin, so it is important to protect yourself.

How Much Oil Does a Hyundai Sonata Take?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata with the 1.6L 4-cyl engine takes 5.1 quarts (with filter) of 0W-20 or 5W-20 synthetic oil. The Hyundai Sonata with a 2.5L 4-cyl engine takes 6.6 quarts (with filter) of 0W-30 synthetic oil. A new oil filter and a crush washer are required.
The best thing to do is to consult the owner’s manual for your specific Hyundai model and speak with a Hyundai service technician. There are many factors that can affect oil change intervals, so it’s important that you confirm things with someone who knows your vehicle best.
Changing the oil in a Hyundai Sonata is a straightforward task that should be performed every 3,000 miles. The oil provides lubrication and cooling for engine components. Heat buildup can cause oil to lose its viscosity and break down. When changing the oil, it is essential to replace the oil filter. An old filter can contaminate new oil and cause engine damage down the road.
That being said, we’ll use the 2018 Hyundai Sonata as an example of how long you can expect to go between oil changes. Under normal driving conditions, the Sonata requires its oil to be changed roughly every 7,500 miles. That’s with an assumption that you’re driving about 1,000 miles each month. Under more severe driving conditions, however, Coastal Hyundai suggests changing the oil on that vehicle every 3,000 miles. This same interval will likely be similar to many other Hyundai models.
