The BMW M4 is a riot to drive, end-to-end. It’s an aperitif that cleans away the uninspired flavor in my mouth left by its predecessor, which offered an uncomfortable ride and an engine note that wouldn’t have passed the first round of American Idol. All of it has been smoothed over and replaced with a vehicle that leaves me yearning to get behind the wheel more often.

There’s also a slight amount of acoustic electro-trickery piped through the speakers, but the straight-six sounds fantastic, especially at higher revs. And there will be many opportunities to hear that roar because peak torque is available (and staying put) between 2,650 and 6,130 rpm, making it easy to become addicted to plunging my right foot into the firewall.
