The BMW X5 models use an automatic transmission. The type of fluid that is used in the transmission is also listed in the owner’s manual. You can find the information on this page if you don’t have the owner’s manual. The correct transmission fluid for your car should meet or exceed BMW’s specifications.
Just like with engine oil, some people use an aftermarket transmission fluid instead of the type recommended by BMW. This can be risky, as aftermarket fluids may not have been tested and approved by BMW. They may also not meet all of the transmission manufacturer’s requirements.

What Kind Of Transmission Fluid Does a BMW X5 Take?
The transmission fluid that is used in 8 speed BMW X5, requires around 10 quarts of SL188 fluid. Using a different type of transmission fluid than the manufacturer originally specified could lead to problems with shifting or even damage to certain components such as valves and seals inside the unit. It may also void warranty coverage because it wasn’t done per the specifications laid out by BMW engineers.
The BMW X Series is a line of luxury SUVs produced by the Bavarian automaker. The first generation, called the “X” (E53), was released in 1999 and ran until 2006 when it was replaced with an updated version known as the second-generation or “Generation II” model (E70).
In 2013, the third installment to this series became available: Generation III or F15. It continues on the platform of its predecessor while receiving upgrades such as increased horsepower ratings and more advanced safety features. Although all three models have been well-received globally, some regions favor one over another for various reasons, including political influence within certain countries that buy them en masse from their local dealerships.
