The early 2009 Flex requires Mercon V, while the later versions of the same model need Mercon LV. If you’re unsure whether your Flex is an early build or a late build, start by examining the pull stick (cap) for transmission fluid. On the cap, it will disclose whether Mercon V or Mercon LV is required. Based on that information, you’ll know if your Flex is an early build or a late build.

When it comes to choosing the best transmission fluid for your Ford Flex, there are a few things you need to consider. The type of transmission you have, the age of your car, and the climate where you live all play a role in determining which fluid is best for your vehicle.

How Many Quarts Of Transmission Fluid Does It Take To Fill?

The Ford Flex transmission fluid capacity is 12 quarts. You’ll need to check your owner’s manual to see the recommended interval for changing your transmission fluid, but it’s generally a good idea to change it every 90,000 miles or so. Ford recommends using Mercon V or Mercon LV transmission fluid in the Flex, and you can find this at most auto parts stores. Be sure to follow the instructions in your owner’s manual when changing your transmission fluid, and if you have any questions, consult a professional mechanic.

  1. The information provided here in regards to ATF in a Ford Flex is not completely accurate. This write up states that all model years of the Ford Flex require fluid type MLV (Mercon LV) which is true with the exception of the early builds of the 2009 Flex. Those require Mercon V while the later productions of the 2009 Flex require Mercon LV. If anyone is unsure if they have an early build or later build 2009 Flex the best place to start to find the answer is to look at the cap (pull stick) for the transmission fluid. On the cap it will tell you exactly which fluid is required either Mercon V or Mercon LV. Depending on that information you will then know if your Flex is an early build or late build. Hope this helps others out there that is confused on which ATF is correct. I have found that a lot of websites give wrong information saying you need Mercon LV when actually it’s Mercon V. Sad to say but one of those websites is the official Ford parts website.
