The Chevy Trax is a small SUV that offers great fuel economy and a comfortable ride. When it comes to transmission fluid, the 2016 Chevy Trax uses Dexron VI fluid. The capacity for this fluid is 4.2 quarts or 4 liters (initial fill). It’s important to check your transmission fluid level regularly and top off as needed to keep your Trax running smoothly.
There are a few things to consider when choosing the best transmission fluid for your Chevrolet Trax. The first is the type of transmission that’s in your vehicle.
Another thing to keep in mind is the climate you live in. If you live in a cold climate, it’s important to choose a transmission fluid that won’t thicken up and cause problems when the temperature drops. Conversely, if you live in a hot climate, you’ll want to choose a fluid that can withstand high temperatures without breaking down.

Checking the Fluid Level
To check the fluid level, first park the Trax on level ground. Then, with the engine running and the transmission in Neutral, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Insert the dipstick fully back into the transmission and then remove it again. Take a look at where the fluid level is on the dipstick. If it’s below the “Full” mark, add transmission fluid until it reaches that point.
Adding Transmission Fluid
To add transmission fluid to your Trax, simply pour it into the reservoir located on the driver’s side of the engine bay. Once you’ve added enough fluid, replace the cap and close up the engine bay. Make sure to check your fluid level periodically to ensure that you don’t overfill the transmission.
If your vehicle is losing automatic transmission fluid, there is likely a leak. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible by a service professional in order to avoid any potential damage to the transmission. Note that some automatic transmissions do not have dipsticks or may require that only a service professional can check the level of fluid. You can find this information in either the owner’s or your vehicle’s service manual.
Types of Transmission Fluid
The Trax uses Dexron VI fluid, but other types of transmission fluid can also be used. These include Dexron III, Dexron IIE, and Dexron IID.
Changing the Transmission Fluid
It’s generally recommended that you change your car’s transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or so. However, if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving or tow heavy loads, you may need to change it more frequently. To change the transmission fluid on your Trax, simply drain the old fluid out and then refill the transmission with fresh fluid. For a complete change, you’ll need about 4.2 quarts or 3.9 liters of Dexron VI fluid.
