Every gasoline engine contains four spark plugs on each cylinder head, one for each pair of cylinders. Each spark plug fires to ignite the compressed fuel and air mixture in a cylinder. The electrical spark isn’t launched into the combustion chamber; instead, it travels over a little distance (usually about a millimeter) through a tiny gap to start it.

The power generated by this little explosion is directed through the piston and converted to rotational energy. The spark plugs repeat the process repeatedly, with one spark plug per cylinder in most cases but two in some instances. Your Acura won’t start or run without spark plugs.

The inside of an automobile engine is far from pleasant. While contemporary engines are designed and constructed to reduce friction between moving components, friction – and the heat that goes with it – is unavoidable as cylinders turn. Every minute, spark plugs fire 1000 times or more. Wear and tear are very serious concerns.

Regardless of how efficient an engine is, a tiny piece of material is emitted after every combustion. Over time, deposits build up on the spark plugs, causing erratic performance and even lower gas mileage. Furthermore, as the heat, particles, and ordinary wear and tear increase the gap that a spark must travel to ignite the fuel/air mixture as it ages, so does the gap between sparks over time.

That is why it is critical to have your spark plugs inspected and replaced as recommended by the manufacturer. Superior materials might have extended the average spark plug’s lifespan, but they certainly won’t last indefinitely.
