The 2AR-FE engine was released in 2008, as a replacement for the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE. The cylinder block 2AR is made of aluminum, with thin cast-iron sleeves. The crankshaft, with 8 counterweights, is installed with a 10 mm offset in the discharge direction and drives the two balancing shafts. Pistons lightened with a floating finger.
A three-layer metal gasket is equipped with a two-shaft cylinder head made of aluminum, with hydraulic compensators. This head is equipped with a variable valve timing system on both Dual-VVTi camshafts. The phases are corrected: 50 ° – inlet, 40 ° – outlet. The camshafts themselves are driven by a single-row timing chain.
At the inlet there is a two-stage ACIS intake manifold with a variable length. The exhaust has a stainless steel exhaust manifold.
A version of 2AR-FSE was also produced, with other pistons (compression ratio 13) and another cylinder head: direct fuel injection D4-S, new camshafts, modified brains.
For hybrid Toyot and Lexus, the 2AR-FXE engine was developed, working on the Atkinson cycle and equipped with other pistons (compression ratio 12.5).
On the basis of 2AR is produced and a larger 2.7-liter 1AR-FE.

Toyota 2ARFE Engine problems
These motors are quite good in their design and have no obvious diseases and deficiencies. From the less important ones: leaks of the pump, knocking the VVTi coupling on the cold (due to the peculiarities of the system), these knocks can be tried to be solved by replacing the coupling.
Also, the engine design does not provide for its repair, respectively, this one-time motor. On the other hand, the motor itself is not bad and reliable, with systematic maintenance, use of high-quality oil and gasoline, the resource of the 2AR engine can be not one or two hundred thousand kilometers.
